This concept design was developed as a response to a brief asking for a design for a series of innovative, low impact, low maintenance trekking cabins to be situated in the extremely challenging landscapes of northern Iceland.
Designed as a series of interlocking modules that could be flown into place by helicopter and configured by a small team, in a number of arrangements depending on the site and the local requirements, these robust and practical pods are designed to act as shelter and refuge for Iceland’s growing trekking population.
Drawing on the historic tradition the creation of cairns as places of shelter and waymarking, the pods use local stone as ballast to stabilise and ‘ground’ the units in their landscape, while the incorporation of retro-reflective panels, high powered LED lighting and their integration with an emergency app allows them to be activated as homing beacons for hikers lost in the snows.
